Let people know when you're unavailable with Gmail out of office replies

Not only is it the respectful thing to do so that they aren't left wondering why you haven't responded to that urgent email, but it can also go a long way towards removing some of the inevitable anxiety and pressure you might be feeling while away from the office.

How to set out of office replies in Gmail on the web

1. Open up your Gmail account in a web browser.

2. Click on the three-dot menu to the top right of your inbox.

   

3. Click on Manage Inbox settings in the pop-up box.

   

4. Click on the General tab in the Inbox settings.

   

5. Scroll to the bottom of the page until you get to the Vacation responder settings.

   

6. Toggle the Vacation responder on radio button.
7. Enter in the First day and Last day of your vacation.
8. Enter an email responder subject line in the Subject box.
9. Compose and format your message.

10. Tap Save Changes when you're done.

    

Per the notification on the left, note that if a specific contact or contact continues to send messages to you, they will only receive intermittent automatic replies. This is to prevent your account from "spamming" others when in out of office mode.

How to set out of office replies in Gmail on mobile

1. Open the Gmail app on your mobile device.
2. Tap on the three-line menu at the top left of the screen.
3. Scroll down and tap on Settings.

4. Tap on the account for which you wish to set an out of office reply.

   

5. Scroll down and tap on Vacation responder.
6. Tap on the Vacation responder slider to toggle it on.
7. Enter in the First day and Last day of your vacation.
8. Enter an email responder subject in the Subject box.
9. Compose your message.

10. Tap Done.

    

Note that if you have multiple Gmail accounts, such as for work and business, you will need to repeat this process for each account. Also, whether you're using Gmail on a $100 burner handset or the best Android phone ever, all of the steps will look the same.
